Plan to stay happy

 

Once you are happy, the tendency is to not think about being happy at any point, and therefore not to be prepared for the setback just around the corner. While being positive and confident are good features, failing to plan for the future is not.

We need to live for today, but prepare for tomorrow, that does not mean getting depressed because we know things will in the future go wrong at times, but that we are happy, confident and enjoy the future, knowing that we have taken precautions and understand what can be done when things go wrong, so that we stay happy throughout life.

Planning to stay happy requires that periodically and at least once a year, you undertake a life audit, look at where you are, what you have achieved, where you are going and if this is making you happy. You could do it on your own, but being honest with a person you completely trust would be better, as it gives you a chance to talk about any concerns, and explore shades of gray, instead of looking at things in black and white. Looking through the topics we have looked at once a year may also help you to consider any areas where perhaps you may be able to make improvements. 

So when should you do this. If you are to do it with a friend, then plan it at the beginning of each year, by fixing a date in both of your diaries, if on your own, then try to select a time when you will have the time to fully consider this, perhaps the dead time between Christmas and the new year, allowing you to set up some new year resolutions, or perhaps when planning how you are going to use your holidays for the year you could plan a weekend away in the spring somewhere pleasant, just for working through this.

At any point where you are feeling less than completely happy consider a review and if this would be wise at this time, but do not allow this to replace the annual plan as it will be less widespread and more targeted, while the annual review should look at all areas and plan longer term to be happy whatever happens.
